The Dept. of Aeronautics issues licenses to all approved airports in the state of Alabama, formulates and adopts aircraft approach plans, and determines air navigation practices that are potential hazards to the general public. (Ala. Code 4-2-34, [1975]. Each municipality in the state is authorized to acquire, establish, construct, expand, own, control, equip, improve, maintain, operate, and regulate airports or landing fields. (Ala. Code 4-4-2, [1975]) The governing body of each municipality, however, is required to adopt regulations governing its airport and to provide penalties for the violation of these regulations. (Ala. Code 4-4-7, [1975]). This series consists of rules and regulations, traffic and taxi patterns, and maps and drawings of various airports in the state of Alabama. Files do not exist for all municipal airports in the state but most of the major cities are represented. In 1948 the Dept. of Aeronautics requested copies of the rules and regulations for all of the state's municipal airports. The Dept. demonstrated a special interest in regulations regarding reckless flying, particularly "buzzing." Other documents to note include one in the Huntsville file regarding the landing of military planes at Redstone Arsenal as well as correspondence and articles concerning the gas tax for airplanes in the 1950s.
